Gaung kepedulian pada keberlangsungan lingkungan alam terasa kian menguat beberapa tahun ini, termasuk di bidang fashion. Banyak desainer serta berbagai merek mewah dunia yang kini beralih ke material yang lebih ramah lingkungan, termasuk di Indonesia. Salah satu material yang termasuk dalam alternatif bahan pakaian ramah lingkungan ini yaitu lyocell, kain viscose atau rayon semi-sintetis terbuat dari selulosa yang diproduksi oleh perusahaan tekstil asal Austria, Lenzing, dengan merek Tencel. 1. Lebih halus dari katun
Kain lyocell—yang lebih sering disebut sebagai Tencel—memiliki struktur serat membuatnya lebih halus dan menyerap air daripada katun. Struktur kain yang lebih baik pada Tencel juga mengurangi terbentuknya bakteri penyebab iritasi kulit. 2. Mendukung kreasi busana
Karakter kain Tencel lainnya yaitu tahan kerutan, sehingga cocok digunakan sebagai bahan untuk baju dengan detail drapery—lipit yang menjuntai. Selain itu, struktur kain Tencel juga memungkinkan material ini menyerap warna lebih baik, sehingga warna baju tampak lebih tegas pula. 4. Material yang lebih eksklusif
Karakter khusus yang dimiliki kain Tencel membuatnya lebih eksklusif dibanding jenis material busana lain. Kualitas dan keunggulannya ini didapat dari penggunaan teknologi khusus yang berbeda pula dibanding dengan material lainnya. Pembuatannya yang memerlukan perhatian khusus ini pula yang menjadikan produksi kain Tencel tidak sebesar kain lain dan membuatnya lebih eksklusif, sehingga harganya pun relatif lebih mahal.

5. Ramah lingkungan
Tencel adalah salah satu bahan paling ramah lingkungan karena ia dibuat dari kayu-kayu bersertifikat, yang sepenuhnya bisa terurai di alam. Proses produksi yang dilakukan Lenzing untuk kain ini juga menerapkan prinsip circular yang berkelanjutan, sehingga jejak karbon Tencel jauh lebih rendah dibanding bahan lainnya. Salah satu penerapannya adalah menggunakan kembali 99.5% air dan bahan pelarut yang dipakai dalam proses produksinya.
 
Di Indonesia sendiri, merek ini telah menjalin beragam kolaborasi dengan berbagai pihak yang memiliki kesamaan visi dengan Tencel–mulai dari desainer fashion, merek fashion lokal ternama, sekolah bisnis dan desain fashion hingga organisasi non-pemerintah. Februari tahun ini, Tencel akan merayakan ulang tahunnya yang ke-30 dengan serangkaian program serta kampanye “Feel Good Fibers Since 1992.” Florian Heubrandner, Vice President Global Textiles Business di Lenzing, mengatakan bahwa di awal tahun ini perusahaan tersebut bertekad untuk menciptakan inovasi bebas karbon yang mampu membawa perubahan pada industri tekstil dan fashion.

“Dalam satu dekade mendatang, kita akan melihat lebih banyak inovasi berbasis keberlanjutan dalam rangka mewujudkan visi bebas karbon di tahun 2050,” jelasnya. “Kami sangat senang dapat bekerja bersama mitra dan kolega kami selama 30 tahun terakhir dan kami menantikan kesuksesan yang lebih besar di 30 tahun berikutnya!”
