Permasalahan limbah tekstil sudah lama membayangi industri pakaian global. Menurut data dari Earth.org saja, industri ini menghasilkan 92 juta ton limbah per tahun di seluruh dunia; sementara laporan AFP menyebutkan bahwa setiap tahun diperkirakan ada sekitar 39 ribu ton pakaian yang berakhir di Gurun Atacama di Chile, yang menjadi pusat limbah pakaian tak laku dari berbagai negara.
Seiring dengan terus meningkatnya konsumerisme global terhadap sandang atau pakaian, berbagai inisiatif di berbagai dunia pun berusaha mengubah perilaku konsumen agar lebih ramah lingkungan. Upaya-upaya daur ulang, upcycling, serta pemanfaatan limbah menjadi material alternatif mulai diterapkan demi keberlanjutan lingkungan alam kita bersama.
1. Program recycle
Saat ini berbagai retail busana mulai tergerak untuk mengembangkan program ramah lingkungan, seperti yang dilakukan H&M lewat program recycle atau daur ulang pakaian. Selain mempromosikan material busana yang ramah lingkungan, retail global asal Swedia ini menerima pakaian bekas pakai pelanggannya di seluruh dunia untuk kemudian didaur ulang kembali. H&M bekerja sama dengan perusahaan daur ulang global bernama I:CO, yang mengumpulkan pakaian-pakaian bekas yang didonasikan di toko-toko H&M, dan membawanya ke penampungan di seluruh dunia untuk dipilah dan diproses menjadi material pakaian yang baru.
2. Pakaian daur ulang
Selain H&M, inisiatif daur ulang pakaian juga dilakukan oleh Circoolar, perusahaan startup yang berbasis di Spanyol, yang memproduksi pakaian kerja bernilai etis (ethical workwear). Perusahaan ini membawa prinsip sosial-ekonomi sirkular yang mengubah limbah menjadi keuntungan, serta mengarah pada pengurangan konsumsi sumber daya primer dan produksi limbah. Nilai ini diterapkan Circoolar dengan menerima kembali pakaian bekas pakai para koki restoran, untuk dipotong kecil-kecil menggunakan alat khusus lalu digabungkan untuk dibuat menjadi pakaian kerja yang baru.

3. Upcycling
Upcycling adalah pemanfaatan barang bekas seperti kain atau sisa tekstil atau pakaian bekas pakai menjadi barang sandang yang baru. Selain lebih ramah lingkungan, pakaian hasil upcycling juga memiliki keunikan yang menambah nilai ekonomisnya. Inisiatif upcycling saat ini sudah mulai diterapkan di tanah air, misalnya upcycling koleksi terdahulu seperti yang dilakukan brand Sejauh Mata Memandang, serta upcycling linen hotel yang dilakukan JKT Creative dalam bentuk pemberdayaan perempuan di lima rusunawa di Jakarta.

4. Material alteratif
Selain recycle atau daur ulang, maupun upaya upcycle atau pemakaian kembali, inisiatif menggunakan material alternatif juga mulai dikembangkan. Salah satunya oleh Rens, start up asal Helsinki, Finlandia, yang memproduksi sepatu kets kedap air menggunakan benang alternatif dari ampas kopi dan botol plastik daur ulang. Sepasang sepatu Rens generasi pertama dibuat dari 300 gram ampas kopi yang setara dengan 21 cangkir kopi. Ampas kopi tersebut diolah dan dicampur dengan biji plastik dari 6 botol daur ulang untuk dijadikan benang polyester, untuk digunakan di bagian atas dari sepatu tersebut. Bagian luar sepatu terbuat dari karet alami.
Selain itu, merek sepatu lokal Sage Footwear juga melakukan pemanfaat limbah serupa. Pada tahun 2021 lalu, Sage Footwear yang berkolaborasi dengan kedai kopi Janji Jiwa memakai ampas kopi sebagai pewarna cokelat untuk sepatu-sepatunya. Sementara itu, material sepatunya sendiri menggunakan serat katun yang didaur ulang dari sisa-sisa garmen.

Setiap tahun diperkirakan ada 6 juta ton ampas kopi dikirim ke lahan pembuangan sampah. Ketika ampas kopi terurai di tempat pembuangan sampah, limbah ini menghasilkan metan, gas rumah kaca yang kuat dan menyebabkan pemanasan global secara signifikan. Tujuan inisiatif ini adalah agar ampas kopi tidak begitu saja berakhir jadi sampah yang merusak lingkungan.
