Di era keterbukaan informasi ini, banyak hal yang definisi serta batasannya semakin kabur antara yang satu dengan lainnya. Batasan gender, misalnya, yang tadinya begitu terbatas, biner, yakni feminin atau maskulin, perempuan atau laki-laki, kini pun semakin cair. Fashion, yang kerap digunakan sebagai medium untuk mengekspresikan diri lewat cara berpakaian, banyak memberi ruang serta alternatif yang lebih inklusif lewat gaya berbusana yang genderless maupun androgynious. Meski sama-sama gender-fluid, apa saja perbedaan antara keduanya?
Pakaian yang gender-fluid
Busana yang batasan gendernya cair atau gender-fluid berarti pakaian tersebut tidak terbatas pada peruntukannya bagi perempuan atau laki-laki, melainkan juga di antaranya maupun non-biner (bukan laki-laki maupun perempuan). Meski demikian, Nick Paget, analis senior di World Global Style Network (WGSN) yang mengalisis kebiasaan belanja konsumen, mengatakan bahwa istilah gender-fluid dalam fashion ini sebetulnya bisa berlaku untuk pakaian apapun. Artinya meski sebuah blus dikategorikan dalam busana perempuan, laki-laki atau seseorang dengan identitas gender apapun bisa memakainya jika memang menginginkannya.

Objek yang netral
Dalam kajian budaya, sebuah entitas—baik itu yang berupa benda material maupun gagasan—pada dasarnya adalah netral. Pemaknaan seseorang lah yang memberikannya sebuah nilai, termasuk pakaian. Rok lilit pada dasarnya hanya sebuah kain yang dirancang sedemikian rupa. Namun seseorang—terlepas dari apapun gendernya—bisa memaknainya sebagai bawahan untuk kebaya, yakni pakaian untuk perempuan. Sementara itu orang lain bisa juga melihatnya sama seperti sarung, dan memakainya dengan tunik. Pakaian adalah sesuatu yang netral, genderless, sampai pemakainya memberikan makna kepadanya.

Gabungan feminine-maskulin
Gaya androgyny lebih dulu populer sebelum istilah genderless fashion. Awal tahun 2000-an, model Agyness Deyn adalah salah satu sosok yang memopulerkan gaya ini. Gaya androgyny adalah cara berbusana yang juga menghindari stereotipe gender tertentu, dengan menggabungkan unsur pakaian yang secara umum dianggap feminin dan maskulin. Di Indonesia, Jovi Adhiguna merupakan salah satu sosok yang mengusung gaya ini pada busananya. Ia memadu padankan kemeja dengan rok, serta tas tangan dan high heels.
